Toyota has released the first fully revealing photo of the Yaris Hybrid-R Concept, ahead of a public debut scheduled for next month at IAA.
The concept is based on the three-door Yaris and is powered by a 1.6-liter Global Race Engine (GRE) working together with two electric motors which enable the car to have an all-wheel drive arrangement.
It uses some of the technology from the TS030 Hybrid race car, such as the possibility to recover energy under braking in a super capacitor and then deliver it to the powertrain to provide an extra boost. Interestingly, Toyota mentions this tech is "suitable for use in a sports car" which means sooner or later it will probably be implemented in the GT86.
The Japanese automaker will showcase its latest developments in fuel cell hybrid vehicles in Frankfurt, ahead of a FCHV production model due 2015. By the end of that year they will have introduced no less than 16 new or updated hybrids.
